Abstract: | Thermal ionization can only be an approximation as the source at the Sun is almost certainly not in equilibrium and probably never has been. Nonthermal ionization is virtually unknown as it requires knowledge of the energy spectrum and elemental composition of the interacting particles in the chromosphere/corona. There are so many unknown parameters that understanding the truth is just like a “can of worms”. |
